Jim MacMillan is the Manager of NDI Training and Level III Services for Applied Technical Services, LLC (ATS), headquartered in Marietta, Georgia. ATS is a subsidiary of SGS, the largest Testing, Inspection, Certification, Consulting (TICC) company in the world. ATS operates a state-of-the-art 150,000-square-foot laboratory and training facility in Marietta, along with multiple training locations across the United States, providing comprehensive testing, inspection, engineering, and training services to a diverse range of industries. Jim has been with ATS for more than 19 years.
Prior to joining ATS, Jim held NDI management positions with Delta Air Lines and Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne. He earned an Associate of Science degree from Atlanta Metropolitan College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Clayton State University. He currently holds numerous Level III NDI certifications through ATS along with NAS410 Aerospace Primes that require these certifications for their NADCAP work.
Jim oversees a department that provides NDI services to clients across a broad spectrum of industries, including nuclear power generation, aviation and aerospace manufacturing, and ASME fabrication. His team includes Level III specialists and embedded inspectors supporting major aviation and aerospace manufacturers. The group maintains expertise in all major NDI methods, including Digital Radiography and advanced Ultrasonic Testing technologies.
In addition to inspection services, Jim leads ATS’s NDI training and qualification programs. Under his leadership, ATS operates as an Authorized Exam Center for the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) and provides training and qualification services to as many as 1,000 students annually at ATS facilities and customer locations nationwide.
Throughout his career, Jim has been actively involved with ASNT and the nondestructive testing profession. He has served on several ASNT committees, including the Certification Management Council (CMC), and contributed to the development of the ASNT SNT-TC-1A Written Practice guidance used throughout the industry worldwide. He has presented more than ten technical papers and presentations for organizations including ASNT, Airlines for America (A4A), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and other industry groups.
Jim holds seven ASNT Level III certifications, along with additional Level III certifications under NAS410, NAVSEA, and EN ISO 9712 qualification programs.
